D’une famille noble mais pauvre, François Joachim de Pierre de Bernis (1715-1794) entra à l’Académie française en 1744. Ses relations d’amitié avec Madame de Pompadour lui valurent une pension du roi et un logement au Louvre. Le 31 décembre 1751, Bernis fut nommé ambassadeur à Venise.
